2018 bottling

Pours a heavily clouded burnished caramel-amber body topped with a steady few fingers of light beige foam; solid
retention leaves a spotty cap and heavy collar of froth; some specks of lacing remain spattered around the glass.

Aromas of caramel malt and a dark fruit medley open things up, with prominent secondary tones of stiff pine needle contributing woody and earthy notes to tones of raspberry, cranberry, and dark cherry; some brown sugar on the back end shows a building sweetness to close out the bouquet.

Taste shows cherry and other dark fruits pairing with a generous dose of fudgy toffee and caramel malt accompanied with a consistent backing of earthy hops and dried pine; lightly smoked burnt sugar sets the tone for the finish.

Mouthfeel has a medium body leaning toward the heavier side and accented with a distinct, dry thickness; slightly creamy; quiet hop bittering stays in the background along with a tinge of sticky malt sweetness that holds through the finish.

A really nice standard American barleywine with a good hop/malt balance coming through along the way; maybe too balanced, though, as no element particularly shines, and a weighty mouthfeel further blankets a fuller character from evolving.

This one pours a dark and murky brown color, with a small head, and no lacing.

This smells like stale hops, alcohol, candied fruit, and caramel.

This is a bit too brash and ugly to be truly top tier. It's quite boozy, with an almost stale taste to it. A touch of oxidation is certainly creeping in, and it's very grainy and harsh. There's a touch of caramel and vanilla, but that's the only bright spot here.

This is medium bodied, and not super drinkable, with a harsh bitterness at the end of each sip.

I think a barrel would smooth out some of the harsher edges of this very raw beer.

2012 vintage, 500ml bottle into a tulip appears muddy brown with a khaki head that fades leaving spotty lace.

Aroma of minerals, citrus, earth and alcohol. This feels like it might have been quite hoppy at one time but its quite faded leaving a peculiar fruited character that masks the malt a bit.

Taste has some caramel malt sweetness, citrus, herbs and earthy almost musty grain that lingers with a faded hop bitterness mingled with alcohol.

Medium in body with modest carbonation. Its an alright brew.

Dark brown body with one-finger of tan froth. Brown bread, spice, cherry and sugar to the nose. I didn't order cake, but I'll eat it. Tastes bready with pumpkin spice, cherry sweetness and a strike of alcohol down the middle. Fine notes of vanilla and earth and wood to boot. Has a hard-to-believe softness going down and hitting all the right notes throughout.

Pour is murky brown with red hues and tan head with large bubbles. Nose has rich dark malt up front with a light grain immediately behind. A bit of root beer and a touch seltzery in back. Taste has a lot of the rich malt up front, caramel and chocolate, a bit sugary and burnt sugar, a note of root beer behind, not as thin as I thought through the finish. Well carbonated and full body, a bit grainy on the palate.

A: brown with a ruby hint in the light with surprising lots of light brown/off white head and a sticky cloud lace
S: orange peel, currants, booze soaked berry
T: Sweet upfront dark fruit with boozy undertones but not too hot
M: creamy feel and very smooth
Overall one of the best barleywines around

2012 Vintage
Poured into snifter

A: Pours a hazy, borderline opaque brown-amber showing orange when held to light. Very thin, quickly dissipating khaki-tan head.

S: Orange, honey, dark rum, caramel, cereal grain aromas all very noticeable and all powerful. Hints of earth and funky tones too.

T: Rich, sweet caramel malts mix with fortified wine and mead flavors. Very slight earthy bitterness is lingering in the background. Very strong boozy tone as well with almost impish floral hop notes.

M: Chewy, viscous body with little, but still slightly tingling carbonation.

O: Sweet and heady; a year has been kind to this beer. At 11.8% ABV when bottled, this vintage beer is best as a treat to be sipped and savored. Pair this with blue cheese for one fantastic indulgence.

No date but I believe it's a little over a year now.

Pours a weird reddish orageish brownish color. Thin tan head that fizzes to an outer ring.

Heavy aroma of leather, a bit of wood oil finish, tart cherry, nail polish remover and crap tons of booze. Interesting and indicitive of a beer that's warming.

Taste is pleasantly malty. Thin in the first half with a malt flavor of caramel and a bit of hearty bread. A little hop bitterness gives way to a smooth hint of toffee and sultana. Big booze towards the end that is sharp yet manageable.

Thin mouthfeel at first. Hefty at the end. Good balance and booze is apparent but not lingering

Overall a pretty nice beer. Kinda wish I had waited another year.

A: Pours a crimosn color with a khaki cap. Not much head retention to speak of, nor does the lacing really wow me.

S: A blend of dark fruits, sharp booze sting on the nose, some caramel and toffee also present

T: The dominant flavors are noticed right upfront: Toffee, caramel, vanilla, and dark fruits. A dose of piney bittering hops is noted providing a pseudo bitterness mid taste to finish.

M: Medium bodied, low on the carbonation spectrum, a sweet and somewhat sticky.

O: A decent barleywine.

Ive had this bottle for about a year. Poured at cellar temp into a snifter. the beer pours a clear chestnut hue with some garnet highlights.
Fizzy tightly packed beige head foams up 1 cm and fades slowly to a sturdy surface layer. Dense lattice as the foam recedes.
Aroma is rich malt with caramel and brown sugar and a bit of dark fruit, plums. I also have just a bit of fusol alcohol notes and maybe a back drop of citrusy hops, but this is very faint.
First sip reveals an average body with sticky texture and mild carbonation.
Flavor is dark fruit and caramel, molasses and general sweetness. The finish rolls to a lingering bitterness and dry state with some hits of peppery booze.
A very enjoyable and spot on barleywine. I am glad I have another one cellared for the future!

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep reddish brown. Chunky head, but not a lot of it. A few bubbles in the collar.

Smell - Caramel and a grapefruit hop aroma. Slight oxidation.

Taste - Creamy caramel malt. Muted grapefruit hop. Monotonous, but good. Still a small amount of oxidation here.

Mouthfeel - Medium body and carbonation. Slightest boozy kick.

Overall - Never a big fan of this style, but it's pretty good. Just dull.

Thanks to davey101 for sending me this one! Excited to try the base beer for Attempted RedRum:

Looks identical to its barrel aged counterpart, except for a thick two fingers of carb that retain pretty well before forming a thin cap.

Again, the nose is subtle... vanilla/caramel dessert presence with a touch of red fruit.

Tobacco flavors seem to hold the reigns on the palate. There's caramel, white sugar, some alcohol warmth, licorice. What a unique beer... and an absolutely stellar contestant for bourbon barrel aging. Well done, NEBCO!

500ml bottle into a Duvel tulip; enjoyed alongside Attempted RedRum. With this review, I will have ticked every active NEBCO beer listed on BA. Cool beans.

A: Cloudy red-orange body under a finger of fine off-white head that leaves spotty lace. Ok.

S: Smooth, rich balance of toffee malt and citrus/herbal hops. Even with some age the hops still have a nice presence. The real star, though, is the rich-but-not-cloying malt sweetness. Excellent.

T: Caramel, toffee, marzipan, and tobacco up front, with citrus hops and spicy, warming alcohol in the background. The bittersweet finish gives way to a nice, lingering, candied-orange aftertaste. Really tasty, but still a bit of a bitter/boozy beast.

M: Creamy full body. Great carbonation, making it mouth-filling without being sticky. Perfect.

O: I was on the fence about this beer when it first came out, but it's really starting to come into its own. The hops are settling into a supporting role, providing complexity instead of just overwhelming everything else with bitterness. Given the improvement its already shown, I'm really excited to see what it does in another year or two.

Hazy and almost antiquated-looking. Looks of a lightly reddish, chestnut brown with some light passing through. Head is well-managed at a cropped half-an-inch--even in this tulip glass. Holds its own pretty well, for now. The lacing might have impressed me more if the glass I used were completely dry upon the pour. 4

Roasted grain with a toffee delight. Dry raisin and muffled notes of dried berry, dark caramel, and trail mix bag. Peeking out is the booze with an almost hidden backdrop of piney and earthy hops. Maybe a touch of vanilla. Very malty, still, in the nose; all things considered. 3.75

Drinks with smacks of pine hop bitterness, dry toffee, crisped rice, and raisin. Very boozy, in fact. Lots of warmth in the swallow, alongside more crushing bitterness. The bitterness keeps it crispy. A few sugars still remain. Some nuttiness, too. Reminds me of flaky baklava crust. Earthy in the middle with more hops pushing forward. Cleans up a bit after the vibrant finish. Medium body isn't too much to handle, nor too little to work with. The carbonation is great; sips want to gush out on the tongue in this barleywine. Aside from the heat, the feel is pretty darn good. 4, 4

A barleywine that I can enjoy, but it's definitely a sipper. Proceed slowly and you'll be smiling all the way to the bottom of the glass. 4

Pours a murky copper to amber body beneath the thick, off white head which leaves a sticky, dense lacing grabbing the glass throughout the beer.

Very diverse aromas featuring both intense hops and more moderate malts. Hops offer some combination of earthy, spicy, and a touch fruity while the malts are nutty or toffee, maybe even maple or molasses.

The flavor is even more pronounced and aggressive with biting earthy hops with sweet toffee or molasses malt similar to the aroma. Other hints of sweet nuts and dark fruit qualities as well.

Offers a thicker, chewy body and generous carbonation with an oily, yet semi fruity sweet finish.

Tons of flavor and character in this brew with a massive palate and generous hops oils to coat the palate.

Thanks to Jon for this one. Had side-by-side with Attempted RedRum. 16oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a creamy, thick 1 finger light cream head with moderate to low retention. Beer is a cloudy, dark mahogany. Very very heavy. Lacing is thick and layered with good stick. A big beer for sure.

Nose is booze, sap hop bitterness, some nuttiness, and a light molasses sweet presence. Not the most aromatic. Pretty pedestrian.

Opens booze, brown sugar, sap hop bitterness, and caramel. Toffee notes mix with more big, bold hop characteristics in the middle. Some maple, more caramel, toffee, and molasses come through. Big malt body fights an even bigger, astringent hop bitterness. End is sweet booze, molasses, some nuttiness, and more caramel and toffee. Aftertaste of astringent sap hoppiness mixed with a bold malt presence. Solid but a bit too bitter for my taste.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Thick and oily in the mouth and goes down smooth and viscous. Messy, boozy finish with a sticky, filmy aftertaste. Real solid for the style.

A solid beer from the look and feel of things but the taste is a bit off. I like my barleywines to have a big malt presence... which this does. But it also carries a huge sap hop bitterness to offset things. I could see this improving with age as the hops start to fall off.

A - White foam settles to a thin collar, spotty lace, and a few wispy patches on top. Hazed orange body with a brownish tinge to it.

S - Smells like grape juice. Well, perhaps vinous raisins mixed with other dark fruits, caramel, a bit of red licorice and cotton candy, bread, and some obvious alcohol. Not my favorite balance of flavors for the style, and a bit boozy, but solid enough.

T - The taste is a bit less sweet and more bready, with lightly burnt sugars, some citrus and earthy hops, and moderate-to-low bitterness. Finish is strange and oddly unpleasant.

M - Medium body, with a surprisingly toasty and dry texture. Lower carbonation, conspiring with the flaccid body to make this a tad watery. Not much alcohol warmth, which is appreciated.

D - Not really what I want in a barleywine. I really dislike the hop character and the corresponding bitterness and alcohol combo in the finish. American barleywines tend to be hit and miss for me, and this is a definite miss, particularly at the awkward phase where the hop aroma has faded, but the bitterness hasn't. Perhaps this will be good in 12-18 months.

This beer was a disappointment. Poured an opaque brown with slight head that dissipated quickly. Smelled like alcohol--unpleasant, but only slightly. Tasted bitter--this beer is over-hopped. This bitterness continues and bites at the tongue long after sipping. Also, the beer is watery and has very little body. Overall, the bitterness is too much and the beer doesn't recover from it.

Served at just about cellar temperature, in my Old Guardian glass, from a 500ml bottle. Awesome label!

Appearance: Premeditated Murder pours out a somewhat murky, ruby brown color. A vigorous pour brought on two fingers of creamy, off-white head. Head hangs there nicely, leaving behind thick gods of lace.

Smell: Boozy, but in a really good way. Some dried dark fruit stands out in front. Light cigar tobbacco enters my nose. Hints of yeast and earth. A slight hoppiness shines through in the end.

Taste: Pretty intense flavor here. No shortage of booze in this brew. Just how a barleywine should be. Definitely a huge malt back bone to sweeten things up. Bits of plum and raisin are noticed. Just a touch of toffee or caramel. A short hoppiness comes in near the end, followed by another big boozy blast.

Mouthfeel: Pretty much full bodied mouthfeel that coats the palate nicely. Seems to be just right for the style.

Overall: Great job NEBCO! Would like to see what this does with some age on it, I just couldn't let it sit in the cellar though ...

The beer is mildly hazy and copper hued with a small off white head. The aroma offers malt, light butterscotch, caramels, toffee. The flavor follows suit. Poured a bottle of this into a NEBCO tulip glass.

The appearance of this barleywine is a deep red-brown tone with one finger of off-white head. Its` aroma has toffee, raisins, vanilla and pine. Sipping on this big beer and I taste caramel , dark fruits, resin, more of the toffee. It does taste very nice, which is great, after anticipating this release. Mouthfeel is getting towards thick, kinda oily, but fairly easy to enjoy at 12%. All in all, another nice beer from the good people out of Woodbridge CT.

This was a very unexpected share from DaveHack. Thank you sir!

This poured out as a slightly hazy amber color with a cream colored head on top. The retention is minimal with a very light lacing. The smell of the beer has a big malt profile with plenty of hops on the nose as well. The taste of the beer is sweet up front, with a really healthy hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel was heavy, nicely carbonated and oily. Overall this beer was good, glad I got to try it!

T: Caramel and a sweet, sticky malt backbone. Some hop bitterness. Exceptionally sweet with a moderate alcohol burn. A bit bland, but not bad.

M: A bit thin and light on carbonation. Sticky, cloying with heat on the back palate.

O: A decent American Barleywine. A bit light on the hop presence. I could almost mistake this for an English-style Barleywine. Not bad... just not a lot going on.

Huge thanks to pete27lax for the hookup and sweet 668 tulip glass that i enjoyed this from.

a - brew poured a soft caramel that settled into the glass as a deep plum mahogany with two plus fingers of beige creamy head that hung out for the party and left thick milkshake like lacing coating the glass.

s - nice mix of plums, grapes, grain, barley, and some soft spicing. many folks talk of intense hoppiness on the nose, but i just am not getting it. that being said, smells pretty awesome and as it warmed got way more complex with big grapejuice smells.

t - flavor is also big and bold and complex, but fairly boozy. the booziness is fairly intense and almost takes over all flavor. behind the booze is the same wonderful grapejuice flavoring that the nose boasted.

m - in a word...HOT.

o - overall a nice barleywine, but a bit overdone in the booziness. if the booze was better integrated (and this coming from me), this would be a homerun.

On tap at New York Pizza. Pours a murky brown with an inch of head. Tons of lacing. Aromas is boozey with some dark fruits, malt, earth and hints of pine. Taste is booze, dark fruit and raisins upfront with some malts and earth. Some bitter piney hops at the end. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice warming alcohol presence but this thing is extremely drinkable. I've been waiting a long time for NebCo to make a barleywine and it has been worth the wait. Overall, really good Barleywine that I look forward to trying with some age on it.
