Specifically, Samichlaus Helles is semi rare.

But as for foreign gems, look at:
    Weihenstephaner Original and Kristall
    Augustiner Edelstoff
    Paulaner Salvator
    Schneider Aventinus Eisbock
Innis & Gunn Canadian Cherry Wood
    Samuel Smith Yorkshire Stingo
    Fuller's Vintage Ale
JW Lees Harvest Ale (my favorite so far was 2007 Legavulin)
    Unibroue La Terrible
    Parallel 49 BA Stout

Ps dont sleep on Balitka #6 and #9.

I thought about Peche Mortel right after hitting the send but it's a seasonal and might be hard to get now. It's the one beer I always stock up on when I see it. Aphrodiasiaque is also great.

They brew both year round - their barrel aged versions are seasonal.

Harviestoun's Ola Dubh 12, 18 or 30 are pretty decent intros into modern Scottish beer. BrewDog can be a throw of the crap dice though and no one serious about beer in Scotland is serious about Innes &Gunn.

In NY I find that not all stores are equal with respect to their import sections. For my money and what my local offers I find these to be good purchases:

    Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen Rauchbier
    Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier
    Fullers 1849
    Fullers London Porter
    Konig Ludwig Weisse
    Kostritzer Schwarzbier
    Theakston's Old Peculier
    Pilsner Urquell (cans only)
    St. Bernandus Triple
    Weihenstephaer Kristall Weiss
Tetley's English Ale (many will disagree on that, but I have no qualms with nitro cans)
    Samuel Smith Taddy Porter
    Hacker Pschorr Munich Lager
    Paulaner Octoberfest
    Rodenback Grand Cru
    Orkney Skullsplitter
Old Speckled Hen (nitro can) - again, many will scoff, but I scarf
    Jever Pils
Schneider Weiss (all taps are good to me)
Saison DuPont (skunk factor is a 75/25 risk in my experience)
    Ayinger Brau Weisse

I'll let others lead you towards sours. I like, but don't have the wide experience

I've only seen it during the winter here. Trust me I check for their beers everytime. I should really do a Peche / FBS blind tasting next year but I'm pretty sure Peche is going to win.

Trappists should be easy to get. If you like (or haven't tried) Belgians, it should be very easy to get Westmalle and Chimay, at a minimum. They're absolutely fantastic, and worth every penny (especially as a special occasion beer, but they're not particularly expensive overall).

For German beers, I'd caution that bottle dates aren't always available, and consequently the beers aren't always fresh. If you can get them fresh, then try away; I love a good German lager, Hefe, Kölsch, Bock, et al.

Finally, Belgian lambics are generally pretty available, as well (at least Lindemans, and likely more in your area), as well as Flanders reds (Rodenbach being a fairly available example). If you're interested in sours, those are a good intro, and are almost always pretty tasty.

Not sure what foreign IPAs are in your area, but Brew Dog is often available stateside fresh, and while they can be a bit pricey, they're not bad at all.

I echo the Ola Dubh rec, but it's pretty damn pricey for the size. Good beer, though.

My primary rec, though, is to try out some Trappist Belgians. Yum!

    Good hunting!

I don't know how easy to find they might be in your area, but look for anything from De Struise out of Belgium. ESPECIALLY Black Albert.

PS: Stay away from the Black Damnation series (almost $50/750ml) unless your ass is an actual ATM. I'm pretty sure they're fantastic, but at that price...just...no.

Print out the Beers of Fame list, take it to a good bottle shop in your town, and start at the bottom and work your way up!

I would definitely recommend the Delirium Tremens and Delirium Nocturne. Those are amazing and I think they won awards a few years ago as well. Regardless, the bottle makes a pretty neat keepsake.

I would kindly suggest anything from Birra Baladin and Birra Del Borgo which should be readily available. But if not I would like to know if these beers make it out to the Northwest.

Must be just a US shipping thing. I get them year round here on the west coast. I would recommend a bunch of amazing BC beers but sadly not a lot of them make it down to you.

ALSO do yourself a favor and get some Weihenstephaner Heffeweissbier (German). Its readily available (by me at least) and IMO one of the top 5 beers in the world.

Suggesting something a little different, all the Hitachino that I've had has been good. I see them around pretty often and at Whole Foods all the time.
