Hopefully there are some people from Greece around here. In short, I've got some people going here for the Easter holidays, and they're not too beer-savvy. Aside from Fix, Mythos and Amstel, any recommendations? I also read about crafts from people like Piraiki, Brink's, ZEOS, Septem, Vergina, are their beers easy to find? And possibly where? Thanks a lot!
Thread bump! I'm heading back in a couple days. A night in Athens (may stop in at Beer Time) and then Naxos, Paros and Milos. I'm a fan of Septem, Vergina and Nissos are alright, Donkey and Volkan if any of them make it off Santorini. Bring me up to date, anyone?
It has its uses but if opportunity arises to do better... my basic beer needs in Greece are to go with fried food and the occasional pre-dinner thirst quencher. I'm not sitting on a beach drinking beer, probably not having multi-beer sessions, probably not in the market for anything big, but would still be good to know.
I don't know anything about Greek (craft) beer, but I do have this article (http://docdro.id/Jyz7PVW, in Dutch). Maybe useful?
So far on Naxos I've found Nissos,Vergina and Vorreia listed at a number of west-side beach tavernas, but in the few places I've asked, they were out of it. Credit for trying and maybe for selling out. I saw those and Septem in a bigger grocery, but not in small shops. Now on Paros I quickly found a new local pils called 56 Isles, and it's a good'n.
Greece has several breweries. From the ones I have tried, here are the best beers: Voreia Stout Solo Skotidi Crazy Donkey Voreia IPA Vergina Weiss Chios Beer Smoked Robust Porter Voreia Wit Pikri IPA
Final trip report: I somehow didn't get around to drinking Voreai despite having a conversation about it with one cafe that stocked in. I like Chios and saw it listed at at a craft beer bar in Parikia, Paros, which looked like about the best beer list I've seen in Greece, including the Donkeys and a few more. I had a great presentation of Fix (I know, I know) weiss in a glass that a restaurant had artfully smoked -- the delicate smell stayed with the beer and worked perfectly with grilled food, really delicious, about as good a beer experience as I could hope to have. I tip my hat to the restaurant or else the brewery (I wouldn't be surprised) that came up with the idea. Otherwise, during my island hopping, I noticed a fair amount of Vergina around, but less Nissos than times past. Trouble in paradise? Well, it was fun, even though I ended going for wine -- since it's so good there -- much more often than beer. But it's good to have good stuff there for when I did. And I'll be back.
