Avery Fortuna is better than many margaritas I've had. It's a tequila BA sour with lime zest and salt. Really delicious.

Yes you are correct. The link you posted was to the gin barrel aged version, which was the Private Stache release. The regular version comes out this year in 6 packs.

I think it's a fine premise and can lead to some creative stuff. That said, I can't think of a single good one at this point; my mind goes directly to the terrible: Atwater's Michelada is the foulest thing I have ever tasted.

I haven't had a beer cocktail yet, I might have to try some.

Sierra Nevada made a Tequila Barrel Aged Lime Ale as part of their Trip in the Woods label. That was supposed to evoke the margarita, but I don't think it was successful at it. A funky beer for sure, but definitely not cocktail like.

Had the Westbrook whiskey sour Weiss Weiss baby at brewvival this weekend and it was delicious.

Our local Four Quarters Brewing has done several cocktail beers - Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, and Mojito. Enjoyed all of them - and I'm not much of a cocktail drinker.

Wow, a lot of beers unknown to me. Thanks.

It's supposed to mimic a Manhattan, not an old fashioned, but that was one of the first I thought of too. Upslope in Boulder, Colorado did a similar Manhattan inspired beer that got even closer to the cocktail than the Avery beer: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18564/174549/

Avery also did Obscuro & Nimbosus, which was supposed to mimic a dark and stormy: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/124408/

And someone else mentioned another Avery beer, Fortuna, which (intentionally or not) has a serious margarita thing going on.

This thread is more interesting than most. We have multiple threads about fruit beers , root beers, ginger ales, a-rita beers. hard lemonades, and now beer cocktail beers.... They all seem to have a common base, They all fall into the definition of "Malt Beverage" and only get added here because they also intimate that they are "Beers or Ales" Therefore NYFRB is a "Beer" and Mike's hard Lemonade is not, even though the production is quite probably nearly identical. Perhaps there should be a "style" that might spur some more interest in what the OP was wishing for "American Cocktail/Fruit/Malt Beverage" I just don't know where you should stick the word "beer" into it for some credibility.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any but I think a negroni inspired wild Ale or saison might be good.

A negroni being gin, campari and sweet vermouth. Fantastic drink, cheers!

I was just thinking about what a bourbon barrel aged sour beer might taste like. I've never had a whiskey sour, but I can only assume it would be something similar.

I will say that Sierra Nevada Otra Vez does remind me of a margarita

The Bruery "Ukulele" (tropical drink) and Pipework's Brown & Stirred (Manhattan) are 2 of my favorites. Brown & Stirred has a BA version too which is better. Also, the previously mentioned Avery Fortuna.

I think this falls into the category that @mudbug was pointing out above. I agree it's a fantastic classic cocktail, but I imagine that the resulting beverage would be closer to an alco-pop than a beer (like SanBitter with some flavorings added).
