Pope’s Visit Inspires Brewers

To celebrate Pope Francis’ late September visit to Philadelphia, at least nine local breweries debuted brews inspired by the Holy Father. A priest from a local church blessed Manayunk Brewing’s Papal Ale, a Belgian-style Amber aged in Malbec barrels. Philadelphia Brewing collaborated with local bar POPE (Pub on Passyunk East) for its Holy Wooder Tripel. Cape May Brewing made #YOPO (You Only Pope Once), and Flying Fish Brewing had Nope IPA for those who wanted to avoid the papal craze with a beer.

Breweries Make Big Ownership Moves

In September, Lagunitas Brewing Company announced plans to enter into a joint venture with Heineken International, where Heineken will acquire a 50 percent share in the Petaluma, Calif., brewery. While leadership will remain intact, the deal allows Lagunitas to expand globally. Also in September, MillerCoors announced its craft and import division Tenth and Blake will acquire a majority interest in San Diego’s Saint Archer Brewing Company.

Grocery Stores Add Beer Taps

Kroger has added beer taps to its stores in several states, including Ohio, Georgia and Virginia. It’s part of the chain’s plan to differentiate itself from competitors by offering growler fills of beers only available in draft. Kroger joins grocers Whole Foods, Wegmans and pharmacist Duane Reed, which already offer beer on tap. Not to be left out, Target has applied for liquor licenses to serve alcohol at its new Chicago location.
