Pabst to Open Pilot Brewery in Milwaukee

Pabst Blue Ribbon announced it will open a pilot brewery in the Milwaukee, Wisc., complex where it was founded in 1844. Plans for a summer 2016 opening include a restaurant, tasting room and innovation laboratory to test new recipes and revive discontinued recipes like Old Tankard Ale and Kloster Beer. PBR last brewed in this facility in 1996.

Norwegian Brewers Recreate Viking Beer Recipe

Working with brewer Kjetil Johnsen of Grünerløkka Brygghus, Anneleen Kool, a botanist at Oslo’s Natural History Museum, recreated a traditional Viking beer recipe. The result was 1,000 liters of the dark Schtøggen Viking Beer, brewed with smoked malt and seasoned with sweet gale, juniper and yarrow, a medicinal herb. They fermented it with kviek, a type of yeast gathered in Voss, Norway.

Ontario’s Liquor Control Board Introduces Craft Beer Zones

Inspired by craft brewing’s 36 percent sales increase from the prior year, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario added the first of 25 planned Craft Beer Zones to its Summerhill, Toronto, retail location in mid-September. Highlighting products from Ontario and greater Canada as well as smaller international beer companies, it also includes the LCBO’s first growler filling station.

Breweries Aid South Carolina Flood Victims

Responding to South Carolina’s historic flooding in early October, local breweries banded together to help. Columbia’s River Rat served free meals and water to victims and volunteers, while Spartansburg brewery RJ Rockers offered up beers in exchange for donations. Anheuser-Busch’s Cartersville, Ga., brewery sent over 206,000 cans of water and an additional 38,000 cans of water came from Oskar Blues Brewing and the Ball Corp. via the CAN’d Aid Foundation.
